Luxury Meets Muscle in the Latest Update
Toyota has refreshed its flagship SUV, the Fortuner, with a set of smart and efficient updates aimed at improving performance, fuel economy, and in-cabin convenience. The new version introduces 48V mild-hybrid technology, along with additional features like idle start/stop, a 360-degree camera, and a wireless phone charger. These updates make the Fortuner more refined, tech-savvy, and efficient, without compromising its rugged DNA.
The biggest highlight of the update is the addition of 48V mild-hybrid technology, available with select diesel variants of the Fortuner. This system adds an electric motor-generator unit and a 48-volt battery that works alongside the internal combustion engine. The goal is to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and offer smoother power delivery, especially during acceleration and stop-start traffic conditions.
This mild-hybrid system doesn’t make the Fortuner an EV or full hybrid, but it provides a subtle electric boost that enhances torque at lower RPMs and lightens the load on the diesel engine. It also powers auxiliary systems and enables smoother gear transitions and engine restarts. Toyota claims this update helps improve overall fuel economy, especially in city driving, where constant gear shifts and traffic signals tend to increase fuel consumption.
To further enhance fuel efficiency, Toyota has introduced an idle start/stop system, currently offered on 4x4 variants equipped with the mild-hybrid setup. When the SUV comes to a complete halt—like at traffic lights or in bumper-to-bumper traffic—the engine automatically shuts off. Once the brake is released or the accelerator is pressed, the engine restarts almost instantly and seamlessly, thanks to the hybrid assistance.
This system helps save fuel during idle times and reduces overall emissions, especially beneficial for buyers who drive frequently in urban environments.
Toyota has also improved the Fortuner’s practicality and safety by offering a 360-degree camera system on variants equipped with the hybrid system. This feature provides a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle, making it easier to park in tight spaces, navigate through narrow roads, and avoid hidden obstacles. Combined with the Fortuner’s high ground clearance and large footprint, the 360-degree camera adds a new level of driver confidence, especially in urban and off-road environments.
Alongside the camera system, Toyota has also introduced a wireless phone charger in the updated Fortuner. Integrated into the center console, this feature allows users to simply place their smartphone on the charging pad—no cables needed. It supports most modern smartphones with Qi wireless charging and helps keep the cabin clutter-free while ensuring your device remains charged during long drives.
